Singapore. Not yet underperforming. But the opposition party is growing and with it the western
bipolar debate culture. I bet that the moderates that have built the country will lose more and
more against the populists from the opposition and the own party. Politicians with catchy one-liners
will be favoured by the journalists and the topic of family debates. Everybody will agree to
discuss longterm visions only after elections. And after the elections is before the elections. In
my home country the moderates can "flee" and build an independent centrist block that has the
parliamentary and executive power to balance both the right and the left. In Singapore on the
other hand, the moderates' ideas will be more and more hollowed out through shortterm
governmental actions. And with such a disappearance of the compromisefinders nothing will
stop the emergence of western rightleft yoyo politics that can only ensure diversity and
tolerance by bloating the administration with higher taxes : The interests of the middleclass
become the playground for the politicians. Either new ideas favor the right or the left or they're
ignored. Thanks to an intrinsic tolerance of different religions and world views, a solid financial
sector and a favorable geographical situation, Singapore will nevertheless and always be a
great place to live and do business. But like in the Netherlands, a growing part of the citizens
will end up frustrated at local politics because the establishment will become unable to see that
the nation as a whole is not moving forward. Hong Kong, Jakarta, Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur are
only happy to pick up the missed opportunities... ( sigh ... ) ...
